I never believed in ghosts or paranormal things, but when my parents went on a business trip and I was left home alone with only my sister, that’s when I experienced the horror I will never forget. I suddenly woke up to a loud crash, but I wasn’t sure where it came from, so I got up and walked down the hallway that connects my sister’s room and the bathroom to my room. I suspected it was a pan from the kitchen that maybe got knocked down, but when I went to check, I looked at my sister’s empty room. She wasn’t there. Was she in the kitchen?
I thought that’s probably where the crash had come from, but from the second I laid eyes on the bathroom door, I instantly froze as I stared at a tall black figure standing in the doorway, swaying back and forth with an unsettling groan. I saw it with my sister in its tight grasp, burning her wrist. A lifeless tear ran down my cheek. I still didn’t know what to do, but my adrenaline kicked in, and I ran as fast as I could to my room, locked my door, and barricaded it. I stood frozen waiting for the tiniest sound but I heard nothing. I stood waiting. My heart was pounding as if it was about to burst out of my chest. I tried my hardest to silence my cry. Just then I heard a footstep then another, and it goes on until the movement stops at the step of my door.
The door knob moves but doesn’t open. I hold my breath as if I’m underwater and wait. A gentle knock, then it gets louder until the sound of my crying can’t be heard anymore and just stops. The door opens but not fully. It’s trampled by my dresser and a bunch of things I bundled together. I realized that I had a fire escape ladder under my bed in case of an emergency, so I pulled it out with all my strength and hurry to throw it out my window. Just then the door opens and the figure is there I can’t risk my life standing still and watching, so I jump out and start climbing.
Once I reached the ground, I looked up and saw the same tall dark figure staring back at me, and it just disappeared. I can’t comprehend what just happened, but it’s dark; street lights were dim, my sister was gone, and my parents couldn’t help me. I was all alone. There’s nothing I could do but stand and watch, hoping things would get better. I found a tree and slept by it for the night, realizing this had been more than just a dream.
